National Security Strategy, MEP Reuten: American interests in the Balkans have

The White House released its National Security Strategy (NSS) in November of this year, setting out America's national security priorities. In the White House document, which will be submitted to Congress, the US also revealed its broad policy for Europe and where its priorities should be focused.

In these summarized points for Europe, the White House document calls for Europe to be able to stand on its own two feet and function as a group of sovereign states aligned with each other, taking primary responsibility for its own defense.

Europe is also required to "build healthy nations in Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe through trade ties, arms sales, political cooperation, and cultural and educational exchanges."

This part of the document was commented on by Bosnian analyst Adi Cerimagic, as well as Dutch MEP Thijs Reuten.

“It will become increasingly difficult, and ultimately impossible, for the United States to commit to working within or supporting the existing framework of European Union integration and enlargement in the region. This also affects the implementation of agreements that underpin the regional order after the 1990s, from the Dayton and Paris Accords, the Ahtisaari Plan, to the Prespa and Ohrid agreements ,” says Çerimagić.

In countries like Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Kosovo, the Bosnian analyst says some political actors already prefer Trump's approach to quick but fragile solutions.

“For those who want to sabotage, this gives them space to advance historical agendas that challenge the post-1990s order. The only way for the European Union to remain relevant, to preserve the post-1990s order and to protect its interests in the region, is to deliver on its promises and significantly increase its engagement with the Western Balkans ,” he says.

Meanwhile, Reuten said that it is very important for peace and stability in Europe that the new American strategy be viewed through the perspective of the Western Balkans.

" Although here too US interests are not served by this strategy, we have no choice but to increase our joint European efforts ," he said.
