The British Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti today in London to discuss the situation in the north of the country.
The Foreign Secretary emphasized the need for the Kosovo government to take de-escalation steps to reduce tensions, reiterating the demands that international allies have prescribed.
Cleverly, further emphasized that among the steps that the Kosovar executive must undertake are: to ensure that the mayors of the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo can work from alternative locations, to withdraw special police units from municipal buildings and take steps to new and inclusive elections.
The Foreign Secretary underlined that Serbia and Kosovo have a responsibility to act now to de-escalate tensions and to avoid any further inciting actions or rhetoric. He also welcomed the release of three Kosovo policemen, who were arrested on June 14 by Serbian forces, while describing it as a step to move forward with the dialogue.
"The United Kingdom was the first country to recognize Kosovo's independence in 2008 and remains committed to its future as an independent, multi-ethnic state in a stable and prosperous region. As I made it clear to Prime Minister Kurti, the ongoing tensions put at risk the hard-earned achievements in Kosovo over the years together with the United Kingdom and international partners", emphasized Cleverly.
