The American envoy for the Western Balkans, directly involved in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Gabriel Escobar, said on Tuesday that the situation in the north of Kosovo has the potential to turn into a regional conflict. In this context, he called on Kosovo and Serbia to work on improving the situation in the north and to return to the dialogue mediated by the European Union.
US and EU request: Return to dialogue!
The American emissary Gabriel Escobar, during a speech at the Atlantic Council together with the European envoy for dialogue Miroslav Lajçak, expressed their concern with the developments in the north of Kosovo, where the situation continues to be tense.
"I am very concerned, and this situation has the potential to turn into a regional conflict and regional confrontation, and that is why we are so strongly supporting the European effort. This must be a European effort, because both countries are in Europe, aspirations the highest of them is the integration in the European Union", said Escobar.
According to him, the USA, as the biggest supporters of Kosovo, would like to see Kosovo become part of NATO and the European Union, so he emphasized that "we want a process that reduces the concerns of the five non-recognizing countries and this should be a European process , but this does not mean that we remain passive", said Escobar.
Even the EU's representative for the dialogue, Miroslav Lajҫak, called for the parties to return to the dialogue.
"The situation is very difficult, I am very worried. Since May 26, there are people who are standing on the streets, there are Kosovo police, there are KFOR forces, while we have already seen a series of incidents, so I consider that the priority is the extension of the situation. People should be removed from the street, the parties should return to dialogue and obviously part of this process is the organization of new elections in the north with the participation of the Serbian community. If we fail to do this then there may be casualties and we cannot afford it this", said Lajcak.
The American envoy for the Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, meanwhile, asked the Serbian authorities for the immediate release of the three Kosovo policemen who are being held under arrest in Serbia. This position was also supported by Miroslav Lajçak.

EU diplomacy has again strengthened its efforts to de-escalate the situation. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has invited the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, for a meeting in Brussels this week. The prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said on Tuesday that he is ready to participate in a meeting with the Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic, this week in Brussels, at the invitation of the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borell.
"Po, unë jam i gatshëm dhe i interesuar që të shkoj në takimin e radhës në Bruksel në mënyrë që të paraqes hollësisht të gjitha këto të dhëna, të cilat i morëm dhe ta kuptojnë që depërshkallzëzmi i situatës që po e kërkojnë të gjithë nënkupton lirimin e menjëhershëm dhe pa kusht të tre policëve dhe dënimin e agresionit të Serbisë në Kosovë, ndërkaq normalizimi nënkupton zbatimin e menjëhershëm, pa kushte dhe të plotë të marrëveshjes bazike”, tha kryeministri Kurti, duke folur për gjendjen e policëve kosovarë që po mbahen të arrestuar në Serbi. Kurti tha se shefi i zyrës ndërlidhëse të Kosovës në Beograd, Jetish Jashari, ka vizituar policët e Kosovës që po mbahen në një burg në qytetin e Kralevës, ndërsa theksoi se rrëfimet e tyre dëshmojnë se arrestimi është kryer brenda territorit të Kosovës.
Vuçiç: Çështja e policëve kosovarë u takon organeve të drejtësisë
Kurse presidenti i Serbisë, Aleksandar Vuҫiç nuk ka dhënë shenja se është i gatshëm të dëgjojë thirrjet e diplomatëve perëndimorë për të liruar tre policët, duke theksuar se “çështja u takon organeve të drejtësisë”. E sa i përket takimit me Kurtin në Bruksel, Vuҫiç tha se “nuk do të bisedojë me zotin Kurti derisa të lirohet çdo serb i arrestuar në veri të Kosovës dhe deri sa të mos tërhiqen kryetarët shqiptarë të komunave veriore”. Thirrjeve të Shteteve të Bashkuara, Britanisë së Madhe dhe Gjermanisë për lirimin e tre policëve të Kosovës ju bashku edhe kryeministri i Hungarisë, Viktor Orban.
"Me respekt, ju lus i dashur Aleksandar që ta mendoni mirë këtë. Armiqtë e Serbisë janë të etur për të dëmtuar Serbinë dhe kjo është një situatë dhe rast i tillë dhe mendoj se do të ishte më mirë që ju të dëgjoni rekomandimin e Hungarisë për t'i kthyer ata në Kosovë”, tha kryeministri Orban në një konferencë me gazetarë në qytetin serb të Suboticës, pas një takimi ndërmjet qeverive të të dyja vendeve.
Nga dita e hënë vendkalimet që lidhin Kosovën me Serbinë, në Merdar dhe Jarinjë, janë të bllokuara dhe autobusët dhe kamionët nga Kosova nuk po lejohen të hyjnë në territorin e Serbisë nga grupe qytetarësh serbë. Ata po protestojnë në shenjë revolte ndaj vendimit të javës së kaluar të Prishtinës zyrtare për të mos lejuar hyrjen e kamionëve me targa dhe mallra serbe në Kosovë, pas arrestimit të tre policëve kosovarë./DW
