The US and EU envoys, Gabriel Escobar and Miroslav Lajçak, have warned of destabilization of the entire region if the situation in the north of Kosovo is not calmed down. They will report today in Washington on what is happening in relations between Kosovo and Serbia, as they were invited to an interview with Ilva Tara.
Gabriel Escobar said that they supported the elections in the north and recognized the results of the elections. According to him, the Government of Kosovo cannot take the northern municipalities by force.
" They should accept the European agreement. They have accepted the plan, there is no other choice. The international community is united in this direction ," Escobar said.
While Miroslav Lajçak said that in the north there were people who were armed and ready to kill. According to him, this should be stopped, adding that everyone should live together and not bring criminals to the north.
" There is no deadline for new elections and it all depends on the political will. There are constitutional procedures that must be met. No one will promote a solution that is unconstitutional, but until now there has been no will to solve this issue ", he said.
They further said that it is the request of the international partners, the EU and the USA, that the three Kosovar policemen kidnapped by Serbia be immediately released. They have refused to give ultimatums as to when the policemen should be released, but they have said that they want it to happen immediately.
" We say immediately. Our position is that if they were kidnapped or entered the territory of Serbia by mistake, they did not have this intention. They must return. I am very worried, as it could turn into a regional conflict ", Escobar said at the "Atlantic Council" on Tuesday.
