Tensions in the North, Kurti: The Government of Kosovo is committed to

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, appreciated the letter that dozens of Euro-Western legislators sent to high officials of the United States and the European Union for changing the approach to Kosovo and Serbia. Prime Minister Kurti underlined the fact that the letter calls for a stricter approach towards Serbia.

"This kind of support strengthens our commitment to complete de-escalation of the situation in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo, the commitment to democracy, and the belief in legality and constitutionality", said Prime Minister Kurti.

The letter signed by ten chairmen of the commissions for foreign relations and 56 deputies calls for preventive diplomacy, balance and non-repetition of past mistakes, while emphasizing the lack of pressure on Serbia after the tensions in the north of Kosovo.

Tensions increased at the end of May when the Albanian mayors of the northern municipalities of Kosovo took office with the support of the police, after the April local elections which were boycotted by the Serbs, who demand the implementation of an agreement mediated by the European Union to a lot of self-governance.

Western diplomacy since that time has been trying to reduce tensions while punishing Kosovo for lack of coordination.

The expert on the political developments in Kosovo, Rrahman Paçarizi, said in a conversation with the Voice of America that the lack of coordination with the Western allies has led to Kosovo being identified as a destructive party.

"We might not have had such a situation at all if the Prime Minister of Kosovo had coordinated with the international allies so that the mayors would not be sent to the buildings from which they now have to leave, so that the special police units would not be needed to be sent at all, and now instead of that we have to return the situation to the zero point, to the point from which we were able not to move at all without damaging the relations with the internationals and through coordination other solutions were found which now we are we desperately seek," he said.

Paçarizi said that Kosovo has now started some kind of coordination with the international community, but it should deepen it even more.

"Because the issue is now like this, we are happy about the letter of several euro deputies, while the government of Kosovo should have already established contacts with all the governments of the European Union countries, with the American government and together with them coordinate all steps. So we have come to the situation where we have to rejoice at the letters or partial initiatives of the European Parliament, the American Senate or the Congress, which means we are back somewhere in the 90s", he said .

According to the agreement that was reached on July 10 in Bratislava in a meeting between the chief negotiator of Kosovo, Besnik Bislimi and the European envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia talks, Miroslav Lajçak, the Kosovo police has already halved its presence in and around the municipal buildings in the north .

The Government of Kosovo has made an effort to ensure the legal basis for holding elections, by drafting a document that would enable citizens of municipalities to dismiss their mayors through a petition.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday evening in an interview in Belgrade that the letter of the European and American legislators is not directed against him but against Serbia./VOA
