On August 12, 2024, the Foundation "Support for the legal defense of Hashim Thaçi" submitted an official request for the increase of funds that will cover the legal defense needs of the former leaders of the KLA.
The letter was sent to Speaker Glauk Konjufca, Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu.
In this letter, the Board of the Foundation points out that the limitations imposed on expenses for legal defense, which are determined by Administrative Instruction MD-NR.01/2024, have put the defense team of former president Thaçi in an impossible situation to fulfill his obligations.
The foundation announces that, due to a lack of funds, one of the top lawyers has left, and the current lawyer has warned that he may leave by the end of the month.
If this happens, the trial may be delayed for at least six months, until a new lawyer is found to be familiar with the case.
The foundation estimates that it is urgent and necessary to allocate additional funds to ensure the effective defense of Thaci in court.
The letter emphasizes that, although the Foundation was created to provide alternative financial support and to ease the burden on the public budget, it has not managed to provide sufficient funds that would make this request unnecessary.
The Foundation believes that financial support from the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo is essential to ensure effective access to justice and to protect the integrity of the KLA's struggle and the right of the people of Kosovo to freedom, reports "Telegrafi".
