After the tensions in the north of Kosovo, the NATO mission, KFOR, announced today that 15 injured Italian soldiers have returned home for medical treatment.
According to the KFOR announcement, 11 of these injured soldiers were injured during the clashes on May 29 in Zveçan, while eight others were referred from the Villagio Italia camp in Peja for medical treatment.
"Today, 15 of the 19 bodies returned to Italy and were transferred to the Italian military hospital 'Celio' for further medical treatment. The others will recover in the KFOR medical infirmary at the KFOR Headquarters and are scheduled to return to their duties soon," the KFOR statement said.
NATO has also announced that reinforcements, consisting of 500 soldiers from Turkey, have begun to arrive in Kosovo. NATO said that these reinforcement troops will stay in Kosovo for "as long as it is needed" and that another battalion has been put on high alert for deployment in Kosovo in case of need.
We remind you that since May 29, the Serbs in the northern municipalities have been protesting for the presidents elected in the north of Kosovo. As a result, 30 members of the peacekeeping force and 52 Serbs were injured. The head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has strongly condemned the violence against KFOR members. The violence has prompted NATO to commit an additional 700 troops to Kosovo, in addition to the 4,000 troops already in the country.
