The spokesperson of the European Commission, Peter Stano, has stated that the EU is ready to organize a high-level meeting between the prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the Serbian president, Aleksandër Vucic, when they agree.
Stano said that the most important step to be taken at the moment is to calm the situation in the North of Kosovo.
In a press conference today in Brussels, the EC spokesman said that Lajcak and Escobar will convey messages to Serbia and Kosovo about the necessity of calming down the situation, so that steps can then be taken towards finding a lasting solution.
"Of course, we are always ready to host a high-level meeting, within the dialogue between Prime Minister Kurti and President Vucic, when there are conditions, and when both of them agree on something like this. But, at this stage, the most important thing is to lower the tensions on the ground and take concrete steps. And precisely for this, we have the EU's special envoy [Miroslav] Lajcak. After he is in Pristina and Belgrade, he will report to the High Representative, [Josep] Borrell, and the High Representative will notify the member countries, to decide on the next steps", declared Stano .
He repeated that Lajçak is today in Pristina where he is expected to meet local politicians, while tomorrow he will visit Belgrade. He said that after the meetings, Lajcak will report to EU High Representative Josep Borell. Then the issue will be discussed among the member countries who will decide on the next steps to be taken.
