Protests against the Albanian mayors of municipalities with a Serbian majority in the north of Kosovo continue today, causing tensions to enter the 6th day.
The number of participants was lower yesterday, compared to the previous days. At exactly seven o'clock in front of the Municipality facility in Zveçan, the protesters started to sign, justifying the action that "they are not allowed to enter the municipality facility".
The tensions seem to have subsided, but they have been replaced by insults and provocations. So far no incidents have been reported.
Members of the NATO peacekeeping mission, KFOR, are positioned in Zveçan. The NATO military alliance has increased its presence in the north of Kosovo, inhabited by a majority of Serbs, after the tensions caused by the entry of the Albanian mayors into the municipal buildings: Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposavič.
Kosovo has been put under diplomatic pressure to reduce tensions. Yesterday the European Union joined the calls of France and Germany to hold new elections in the north.
There are three demands that the EU issued for Kosovo:
1- New choices now;
2- To ensure the participation of Kosovo Serbs in them;
3- Start work on the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that he agrees to new elections in the northern municipalities, after the conversation with the American official. He added that in order to de-escalate the situation, there must be an end to the violence by the gangs supported by Belgrade until the new elections.
Borrell's requests came after Osmani's meeting with the President of France, Emanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the head of EU Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, where the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, was also present at this meeting. It was the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, who first said that Germany and France have asked Kosovo and Serbia to hold new elections in the municipalities in the north of Kosovo.
“Franca dhe Gjermania u kërkuan udhëheqësve të Kosovës dhe Serbisë të organizojnë zgjedhje të reja në rajonet e prekura nga trazirat sa më shpejt që të jetë e mundur”, tha Macron, i cili shtoi se u kërkua që të qartësohen edhe rregullat për zgjedhje.
Po ashtu Osmani konfirmoi takimin me Vuçiçin. Osmani tha se gjatë takimit ishin të pranishëm edhe presidenti i Francës, Emanuel Macron, kancelari gjerman Olaf Scholz dhe shefi për Politikë të Jashtme të BE-së, Josep Borrell. Presidentja theksoi se edhe njëherë u dëshmua se Vuçiç nuk është i interesuar për zgjidhje dhe as për paqe.
“Në fund të takimit me Macron dhe Scholz, ata propozuan që të kishte edhe një diskutim joformal me presidentin e Serbisë, natyrisht në takim ishte edhe përfaqësuesit i Lartë i BE-së, Josep Borrell. E kishim një takim të përbashkët diku 10 minuta, ku edhe njëherë u dëshmua se Vuçiç nuk është i interesuar për zgjidhje dhe as për paqe, por në fakt është burimi kryesor i jostabilitetit në gjithë rajonin tonë”, u shpreh ajo.
Dje, ministri i Punëve të Brendshme, Xhelal Sveçla ka theksuar se serbët e Kosovës në vazhdimësi janë nën trysni dhe kërcënime që të kryejnë veprime jashtë vullnetit të tyre.
Ministrit Sveçla, ka shkruar në Facebook se pas kushtëzimeve për të marrë pjesë në protesta e organizime të drejtuara nga Lista Serbe, protestuesit sot po detyrohen të nënshkruajnë në lista pjesëmarrjen e tyre në protestë.
Meanwhile, the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, exchanged accusations about the tensions in the north of Kosovo, before meeting in the presence of several European leaders in Chisinau, Moldova.
The situation in northern Kosovo became tense on May 26, when the Kosovo Police helped Albanian mayors of Serb-majority municipalities enter the municipal offices, despite resistance from local residents.
