Security expert Ilir Kulla, commenting on the parliamentary elections in Kosovo, predicted a new victory for Albin Kurti and the Vetëvendosje Movement. According to Kulla, developments during the election campaign have confirmed his belief that Kurti will not only win, but may achieve an even better result than in the previous elections.
He argued that the opposition parties missed the opportunity to create a competitive alternative, as they failed to unite on a common list. According to him, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) and Nisma should have formed a single coalition to challenge Vetëvendosje.
Kulla stressed that the electoral system in Kosovo favors the party that comes first, as it has the right to propose the speaker of the Assembly and to receive the mandate to form the government. According to the security expert, the lack of cooperation between the opposition forces could lead to the further strengthening of Albin Kurti's positions in Kosovo politics.
He also warned that Kosovo could face institutional deadlocks again after the elections, especially in the process of electing the president, which, according to him, could lead the country towards a new cycle of early elections.
Excerpt from the interview:
-Okay, let's move the conversation even further. Given that Kosovo votes in early parliamentary elections this Sunday, I want to know if you have changed any approach, any expectations, any predictions, compared to what you stated earlier in this studio? Now that the campaign has also been conducted there. How did it seem to you?
Ilir Kulla : No. Look, I have been following the campaign because I go to Kosovo at least once a week. I am saying that Albin Kurti will win and will win more than before.
-Why do you say that?
Ilir Kulla : Also because of the campaign. That is, the opposition did everything possible not to unite. I told you that if the opposition unites in one list, things change. The same previous picture is being repeated there. So, as the late Fatos Nano said, two people of the same color who the first time made a person of color, will make a person of color the second time, that is. So the only thing I see is that, if we are to go back to a similar situation, where the opposition parties will again block the election of the president, we will have elections again in the fall. Because this is the system.
So they should not behave like teenagers, despite the fact that Kosovo is the age of a teenager, so it is 18 years old, but take over the process of transforming the state through political mechanisms that elections provide. Although, keep in mind that the world is changing very quickly and they must adapt and maintain this, so to speak, this internal guarantee of the internal balance of a state that has not been born for a long time. Of course, I see that those parties had a historical duty to unite in a single list, as a result of the percentages in the last elections, PDK, LDK, AAK, and even Nisma if you like, and I believe that it would be a different political situation. We could have rotation.
But with the electoral system they have, the first party is the one in charge of electing the Speaker of the Assembly, the first party gets the mandate for prime minister. That gentleman is in the prime minister's office because he got that right, and these others cannot get out of the first party. On the contrary, if someone slips and does not enter parliament, those mandates go to the first party. And I think they have entered a perfect course to turn Albin Kurti into a more authoritarian leader in our region. Because the need and necessity that every country, including Kosovo, has for political transformation, must first start with the internal political transformation of the political forces.
