Elections in Kosovo, voting from the diaspora starts today; how to proceed

From today until February 8, over 100,000 Kosovo citizens living abroad will be able to vote by mail for the Kosovo parliamentary elections on February 9. While on February 8, they will be able to vote physically in the diplomatic representation of Kosovo in 22 countries of the world.

How they vote depends on how they chose to vote when they registered as voters.

How is voting conducted?

Of the 104,924 voters who registered to vote outside Kosovo, 84,525 of them chose to vote by mail, according to the Central Election Commission (CEC).

So, 67,421 have registered to send the ballot package to the CEC mailbox outside Kosovo, while 17,104 will send the ballot package to the CEC mailbox in Kosovo.

Kosovar immigrants have the opportunity to vote physically on February 8 in diplomatic and consular representation in the countries where they live.

Polling stations in diplomatic and consular missions will be open from 07:00 to 19:00, according to local time in the respective countries.

All those who possess identification documents issued by Kosovo, such as an identity card, passport or driver's license, and who have previously registered for voting, have the right to vote.

In case the identification document issued by the state of Kosovo is expired, they are required to present a valid identification document of the state where they live, according to the CEC.

Where will Kosovo immigrants be able to vote?

The voting centers in the diplomatic representation of Kosovo for the elections for the Assembly of Kosovo, which will be held on February 9, 2025, according to the Central Election Commission, are in the following states:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Canada, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, United Kingdom, Norway, United States of America, Albania, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, Switzerland.

Can an immigrant vote in Kosovo on election day?

Yes. An expatriate can come and vote in Kosovo on the day of the parliamentary elections on February 9. He can do this at the polling station of his respective municipality.

But, to do so, he must not be registered in advance as a voter abroad.

Voters registered abroad do not have their names on the list of voters in Kosovo.

More about the February 9 election

The CEC has announced that the number of voters for the February 9 elections will be 2 million 75 thousand 868 voters inside and outside Kosovo.

28 political entities with 1,280 candidates have been certified for these elections.

On the ballot, voters will be able to choose one political entity and up to ten candidates for deputy. This is a change after the adoption of the new Law on elections. In the past, citizens have had the opportunity to choose up to five candidates.

Each certified party can have up to 110 candidates on the electoral list.

From these lists, the new composition of the Assembly with 120 seats will be chosen, and the MPs will then elect the new Government. The current government in Kosovo is led by Albin Kurti, head of the Vetëvendosje Movement.

The election campaign will start on Saturday, January 11, and for a month, parties and candidates will try to convince voters to choose them.

These will be the first regular elections that Kosovo holds since the declaration of independence in 2008./ REL
