Ralf Schumacher, the brother of 7-time world champion Michael, has managed to conquer the front pages of the sports media after revealing that he is gay. The former Formula 1 driver posted a photo of himself and his partner, accompanied by an emotional caption.
"The most beautiful thing in life is when you have the right partner by your side with whom you can share everything," wrote Ralf Schumacher in the photo.
Ralf is best known as the younger brother of seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, but has also had a career of his own.
Eventful marriage and divorce to Cora Brinkmann
In April 2001, Ralf Schumacher became engaged to Cora-Karolina Brinkmann, a former model from Germany, and they were married on October 5 of the same year in a private ceremony at the couple's home in Hallwang, Austria. Later that month their child, David Schumacher, was born, who also tried to become a Formula 1 racer. On 20 February 2015, Ralf Schumacher's lawyer confirmed that Schumacher and his wife had divorced after a bitter period of separation.
The couple fought over custody of their son and Schumacher's fortune, which is estimated at 100 million euros. The disputes were however settled after Cora Brinkmann received 6 million euros and the family home in Bergheim.
At the beginning of the year, the former couple became part of the news again due to the presence of the model in the reality show "Jungle Camp", a type of Survivor that has been shown on German television for more than 15 seasons. The Schumacher family feared at the time that "talkative" Cora would reveal information about Michael Schumacher's health.
However, just three days after filming began, the model decided to "voluntarily" leave the show, which takes place in an Australian jungle.
"Bild" strongly disputed this official version and linked her departure to "the mysterious clause that the RTL network has with the Schumacher family". The clause prohibits debate about the champion's health. The German tabloid claimed that “the producer of the show breathed a sigh of relief after Cora left, because she had some fear of discussing topics that she shouldn't.
The former model and TV host is not part of the inner circle that can visit Michael, but "network executives were afraid of any information she might have about him."
Cora was a member of the Schumacher family for almost 15 years and even dated Ralph for 2 years after Michael's accident. Although he does not belong to the inner circle of people who have access to meet Schumacher, he is known to maintain a respectful, if not overly close, relationship with Corina Schumacher, the wife of the Formula 1 legend, who is also responsible for maintaining the driver's privacy.
