Netflix cancels Prince documentary after abuse allegations

Netflix has decided to cancel a documentary about the life and career of legendary musician Prince, which was in production for more than five years. The decision came after allegations of abuse against the late musician, including claims of physical and emotional abuse, which were made by Prince's former partners, as well as claims about his difficult childhood.

The documentary, directed by Ezra Edelman, was an ambitious project, with nine hours of footage that included exclusive footage from Prince's private archive and interviews with more than 70 people. However, after a private screening of the project in July 2024, Prince's estate demanded major changes to the film after it was criticized for featuring allegations of abuse. Jill Jones, Prince's former partner, had said that he repeatedly hit her, while Susannah Melvoin said that he controlled her and prevented her from seeing her family.

After Prince's estate attorney, L. Londell McMillan, submitted a 17-page list of comments, requests for changes were considered, but director Edelman was reluctant to change some parts of the film, noting that it is difficult to portray the truth when everyone has their own version of events.

Representatives for Prince's estate called the documentary "sensational," noting that a new film will be released that will include exclusive material from the musician's private archive. McMillan stressed that while Prince had "human flaws," he was an extraordinary artist and his legacy will be honored in a fair manner.

Prince, who died in April 2016, was known for his extraordinary contributions to music, leaving behind 39 albums and many unreleased songs.
