"Those I collaborated with blocked my songs", Big Basta: I was forced

Big Basta has spoken for the first time about the feelings he experienced when he was separated from music in Albania. While he was invited to Meriton Mjekiqi's show, Big Basta also stopped at current Albanian rappers, giving an assessment of each of them.

Question-What is the reason you stopped making music for a long time?

Big Basta: When I was in New Zealand for 6 years, I automatically didn't make music. But I almost paused before I left, but that wasn't my wish. I had a very difficult moment in my career, where many people I collaborated with, with the Albanian mentality, blocked my videos, songs... To some extent, it is possible to even remove you from the algorithm. There were moments when I was active, but the moment I published something, it either didn't come out, or the views dropped. I asked experts in the field, but the only experts in the field who were there at that time were those who had harmed me. Victimization is not part of me, I'm simply telling what happened. Did I experience it badly? Of course I did!

Question-Have you experienced any periods of depression due to leaving music?

Big Basta: It's one of the reasons why I decided to leave. From a very outgoing person, I turned into a very introverted person. Whatever kind of thing I was working on in the studio, I didn't enjoy working on anymore. And I got to a point where I blamed myself or my art, which is very wrong. I realized this much later.

Question-How did you get through this difficult phase?

Big Basta: I started blaming Albanians and wanted to go to a place as far away as possible, where there are no Albanians. I started blaming the Albanian mentality and Albanians in general. It was a mistake on my part. But I had to completely escape to the Southern Hemisphere, as far away from everyone as possible, I had to meet the best Albanians in the whole world and understand that the problem was me, my naivety and the fact that I was very emotional at the time. I understood that when an artist reaches a certain level, he can no longer be emotional, the artist must be eagle-eyed, without feelings. And this is one of the reasons that artists must express themselves in art, to show themselves without any kind of compromise with the market.

Question – How has this period of your separation from music affected Vesa Luma?

Big Basta: Even with Vesa, I feel guilty in a way, because I chose to walk away from everyone. But the fact that we have been together for so long is because we have supported each other through good and bad. I have always told Vesa: “Whatever happens between us, I will never forget the support and encouragement you gave me in my most difficult moment.” She has always been supportive, she is not critical. This is what she has always done for me and makes me love her every second like the first time.

Big Basta was also asked about some of the famous Albanian artists and gave an opinion on each:

Big Basta: Unikkatil has given a lot to Albanian Hip Hop, he has given very good poems, he has given very good rhymes. Even for the fact that he has been in America, he has been in emigration the whole time and has tried to give a lot to Albanian music. In my opinion, he deserves an extraordinary 'Big Up'.

Even with Ledri Vula we have more or less the same career years together. He had a very good start and also produced extraordinary songs. I have heard some of the songs on his last album, I really liked the song "Përshnëdetje Hejter". I don't know if I agree with the collaborations he has released recently. I don't know if I agree with seeing Ledri in that kind of style, in that kind of flow. But I hope he returns to his artistic identity as soon as possible. These last two collaborations with Elvana are excellent productions, very good, but I don't know if I had seen Ledri there.

Ghetto Geasy, performer, producer, lyricist, businessman, there were moments when he wrote lyrics with a lot of meaning, there were moments when he did it simply for the sake of commerce. He had a very good golden time, he brought out extraordinary new talents. Respect.

Noizy is true that he had a very difficult time when he started, because the Hip Hop market in Albania was not very stable, there were very few of us then. And to be honest, the rappers from Kosovo were much more prepared and much more dominant. He worked, he kept it consistent. Unikkatil and Noizy have something in common, that they have never changed their style.
