New Year's Eve is widely celebrated around the world. Even in our country, this is one of people's favorite holidays, when they try to forget all the stresses for a day and have a good time in the company of loved ones. Among the many traditions that accompany this holiday, such as baklava, turkey and filling the table full of good food, there are also many superstitions, which we willingly believe. Some superstitions we heard from our grandmothers, some others we borrowed from other countries, but many people respect them. What are some of these superstitions that people believe about New Year's Eve?
Cooking lentils
The superstition of cooking lentils comes from Italy and symbolizes coins, as in Roman antiquity a bag of lentils was always given as a gift in the hope that they would be converted into coins.
Opening a pomegranate seed
A pomegranate seed opened and placed on the home table is thought to bring good luck. The Greeks think that this fruit is auspicious for the start of the year. They smash the pomegranate against the main door of the house and the more seeds that come out of it, the better the year will be.
Consumption of grapes
In Spain people consume 12 grapes on New Year's Eve, one grape for each month. According to them, this fruit symbolizes abundance.
Round fruits
In some other countries, mainly in the Philippines, the table is filled with round fruits, as this is the shape of coins and brings income.
kissing
Another thing that is thought to bring good luck is exchanging a kiss at midnight.
Opening a bottle of champagne
Champagne also brings good luck, so be sure to open a bottle of champagne at midnight to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.
The New Year should not find you in debt
Many people think that if the New Year finds you in debt, you will also spend the coming year taking on debt.
Don't finish the whole dish
The New Year should find you with a full table, so make sure you leave something on the plate and don't eat it all before the clock strikes 00:00.
Don't cut the bananas
Bananas are thought to bring bad luck. If you have them at home, do not cut them or even consume them on New Year's Eve, leave them for the next day (always if you are superstitious).
Other foods to avoid are things with wings, such as chicken, as it is believed that luck flies away if you eat them.
Also, you should not consume the arragosta , since it goes backwards and your luck can go the same way in the coming year.
