A man has sued a hospital for US$643 million (A$1 billion) after being encouraged to watch his wife's caesarean section.
A man in Australia has sought to sue a Melbourne hospital for $1 billion, for psychological damages.
He said he was "encouraged" to see his wife having a C-section.
"I was prompted to see my wife undergo a caesarean section," he recounted.
The man said that seeing his wife's blood and organs led him to develop a "psychotic illness", according to local media.
Anil Koppula tried to sue the Royal Women's Hospital for encouraging him to watch his wife give birth by caesarean section in 2018.
He sued for A$1 billion, which is about $643 million.
The operation was a success, but the man alleged the hospital failed in its duty of care by letting him watch the procedure which he says left him traumatised.
A cesarean section is a common operation in which a surgeon delivers a baby "through an incision made in the abdomen.
The surgical procedure is often performed when a natural birth is dangerous or difficult and poses a risk to the mother or baby. In Europe and other continents, cesarean delivery is prohibited according to the mother's wishes, while in Albania it is allowed.
Koppula filed suit several years after the surgery, claiming the hospital owed her damages for the life-changing psychological damage she suffered.
In his legal claim, he said his "psychotic illness" led to a "breakdown of his marriage".
Koppula chose to represent herself in court, where Judge James Gorton dismissed the lawsuit and deemed the claim an "abuse of process," according to Global News.
Trial proceedings included a medical examination of Koppula. The judicial panel concluded that the alleged psychological effect on Koppula was insufficient.
