Oscar-winning Irish actress Brenda Fricker has died at the age of 81, leaving behind a long and distinguished career in film and television.

Fricker made film history in 1990 when she became the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was praised for her portrayal of the mother of Daniel Day-Lewis' character in the film "My Left Foot," beating out Hollywood icons Julia Roberts and Anjelica Huston.

The public also remembers her for her role as the homeless woman who befriends Kevin, the character played by Macaulay Culkin, in the famous film "Home Alone 2", as well as for her portrayal of nurse Megan Roach in the British series "Casualty", where she first appeared in 1986 and returned until 2010.

The news of her passing was accompanied by a touching message from her agent, Phil Belfield, who described Fricker as an extraordinary artist.

"We will never see her the same again and the world is a smaller place for her absence," he said, adding that it was a privilege to know, love and work with her.

Born in Dublin, Brenda Fricker began her career in the 1960s with roles in theatre and television, including the Irish soap opera "Tolka Row." She later went on to star in such popular productions as "Coronation Street" and "Play for Today," building a career that spanned decades.

Her filmography also includes well-known titles such as "So I Married an Axe Murderer" (1993), "Angels in the Outfield" (1994), "A Time to Kill" (1996) and "Veronica Guerin" (2003), roles that consolidated her as one of the most respected Irish actresses of her generation.
