A serious incident has shocked Italy, where sports journalist Luigi Esposito, 53, was found dead in an agricultural area in Eboli, near Salerno. According to authorities, it is suspected that he was shot and then his body was set on fire, while the investigation is still ongoing.
The charred body was discovered by firefighters while battling a bush fire. Due to the severe damage from the flames, identification was not possible at first. Later, the victim's vehicle was found near the scene, leading to his identification.
According to investigators, several shell casings were found at the scene, while an autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death and help shed light on the circumstances of the crime.
Esposito, also known professionally as Luca, was a well-known name in Italian sports journalism. He collaborated with the newspaper “La Città di Salerno”, the television “OttoChannel” and was the founder of the sports portal “Tuttosalernitana.com”. In addition to his engagement in the media, he also worked at the Regional Environment Agency and had completed his studies in biology and literature.
His colleagues remembered him as a dedicated journalist and a professional with integrity. The director of "OttoChannel" called his death a great loss for sports journalism and demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Salerno Prosecutor's Office, under the direction of Rafaele Cantone, has launched an investigation and is examining all leads to discover the perpetrators and the motive for the crime. So far, authorities have not confirmed whether the murder is related to his journalistic activity.
