Israel's representative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, Noam Bettan, took to the stage of the "Wiener Stadthalle" amid a tense atmosphere and ongoing controversy over Israel's participation.
During the performance of the song Michelle , both supportive cheers and loud boos from a section of the audience were heard in the hall. According to reports from the arena, one person was also heard shouting anti-Israeli slogans with direct reference to the war in Gaza .
However, once the music started, Bettan's performance continued without any technical incidents or interruptions. The emotional ballad was followed with great attention by the audience present in the hall, while the artist is considered one of the potential favorites of this edition.
Before the show began, Austrian public broadcaster ORF stated that it would not censor negative reactions or boos towards participants.
"This is a decision in defense of freedom of expression within the arena," the organizers' official statement said.
This year's edition has been accompanied by strong political debates and numerous protests against Israel's participation, following developments in the war in Gaza. Several countries such as Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain have expressed opposition or boycotted activities related to the competition.
Following the Israeli military offensive and genocide in Gaza, calls for Israel to be excluded from Eurovision have increased significantly. However, the European Broadcasting Union decided to allow the country to participate, causing strong divisions among fans and the artistic community.
Meanwhile, authorities in Vienna have increased security measures inside and outside the arena, due to tensions and protests announced during the festival.
Noam Bettan's performance is considered one of the most controversial moments of this jubilee Eurovision, where music and politics have collided harder than ever.
