A new wave of arrests has shaken the showbiz world in Istanbul, as Turkish authorities have carried out extensive checks as part of a drug investigation.
According to an official announcement by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office, 25 arrest warrants have been issued for people suspected of purchasing, possessing, using narcotics, and creating conditions for drug use. So far, 17 people have been arrested, while eight others are still being sought.
Among those arrested, according to reports by the Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), are well-known names from the artistic and public scene.
These are the lead singer of the rock band "Duman", Kaan Tangöze, pop singer Murat Dalkılıç, as well as an actor, a model and several well-known business figures.
According to the prosecutor's office, quantities of marijuana were found during the searches. Authorities emphasize that the charges brought can be punished with up to five years in prison, based on Turkish legislation.
The development comes at a time when Turkish authorities have intensified their crackdown on public figures. Some critics have seen it as an attempt to put more pressure on celebrities' lifestyles, but law enforcement insists the operations are part of the war on drugs.
Investigations continue, while new developments are expected regarding the remaining suspects and the progress of the legal process against those arrested.
