A North Dakota woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing her boyfriend, Steven Edward Riley Jr., 51.
Ina Thea Kenoyer, 47, poisoned her boyfriend with antifreeze after he threatened to leave her after he thought he had secured a $30 million 'family inheritance'.
Riley was tricked into believing he had inherited the money from a distant relative and was waiting for a lawyer to collect the money, which turned out to be a fraud.
Riley's son told the New York Post: “It was a hoax. My father thought he would get the money when the lawyer came, but he never showed up."
Police believe both Riley and Kenoyer thought the legacy was real. Before her death, Riley planned to end her relationship with Kenoyer. On the other hand, Kenoyer believed that after his death, he would receive the 30 million dollars as his "informal" spouse, but the police informed him that North Dakota does not recognize uncelebrated marriage. When she received this news, she reacted nervously.
On October 16, 2024, Kenoyer was sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder. Filimish, she denied that she had poisoned her boyfriend, but later pleaded guilty.
An autopsy revealed that Riley died after drinking antifreeze, with toxic levels of ethylene glycol found in his blood. Police investigations showed that ethylene glycol is added to antifreeze to make it sweet and can be easily camouflaged in sweetened beverages such as tea.
Judge Richard Hagar accepted the joint sentencing recommendation from Kenoyer's defense attorney and state prosecutors.
