Donald Trump has denied claims made by director Chris Columbus that he asked to play a scene in the popular film "Home Alone 2" in order to advertise his hotel.
The former US president said on his social media platform that the film's production team had asked him to make a cameo appearance.
Trump said of the 1992 film: “They rented the Plaza Hotel in New York, which I owned at the time. I was too busy and didn't want to do it. They were very pleasant, but above all persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history! That little part took off like a rocket and the film was a huge success, and still is, especially at Christmas time. People call me every time it airs.”
The sequel to the 1990 comedy Home Alone, Home Alone 2 grossed $359m (£280m) and was the third highest-grossing film of 1992, The Guardian writes.
In 2020, Columbus, who directed both films, told Business Insider that Trump's film was a condition of being able to film inside the Plaza Hotel, above the usual fee.
Columbus reported that Trump said the only way they could use the Plaza Hotel is if it was in the movie. In turn, Trump also said this week that his appearance had given the film a significant boost.
“This performance helped make the film successful, but if they felt bullied, or didn't want me, why did they put me in and keep me there for over 30 years? Because I was and still am great about the movie, that's why! Just another Hollywood guy from the past looking for a quick fix of Trump publicity for himself!”
The Home Alone movies, in which Macaulay Culkin plays a young man who is accidentally forgotten by his family and must fight off thieves played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, have become Christmas staples.
