Overweight rapper Dunk Demos (Dazhua Blanding) has reached an out-of-court settlement with Lyft after filing a discrimination lawsuit against a driver who refused to pick her up because of her weight.
The incident occurred in January, when the driver told Blanding that it was “too big” for his car and even warned him that he would “slash his tires” if he tried to get in.
At the time, the rapper had publicly stated that she weighed over 250 kilograms, but had lost over 18 kg on a weight loss program. In a video posted to Instagram, she showed the moment of the collision, where she insisted that she could get into the vehicle, while the driver objected.
He then apologized and suggested she order an Uber XL, promising to reimburse the trip.
According to her lawyers, the driver's refusal violates Michigan state law, which prohibits discrimination based on weight. "Refusing to transport someone for this reason is not only illegal, but also dangerous," attorney Zach Runyan told Fox 2.
Blanding expressed her disappointment, saying: "I've been in cars smaller than this. I want them to know that my feelings were hurt."
The incident has sparked debate on social media: some users supported the rapper, while others sided with the driver, emphasizing the safety of the vehicle.
