In 2013, Michele Catalano and her husband from Long Island, New York, found themselves in an unusual situation after some innocent internet research.
Michele was looking for a pressure cooker, while her husband was looking for a new backpack for his work computer. Since the Boston bombers were said to have used pressure cookers in backpacks for their attacks, this research raised suspicions with her husband's employer.
The employer reported this action to the Suffolk County Police Department and immediately police forces went to check the couple's home. The police wanted to find out if these searches were used in preparation for any criminal act, thus prompting a terrorism investigation.
The shocking experience disturbed and frightened the couple. Michele described this experience in her blog, noting how the sudden police knock and the feeling of being watched had changed her perception of privacy.
"I felt anxiety. If I'm going to buy a pressure cooker in the near future, I'm not ordering it online. I'm scared."
