Beware of conditioner! Excessive use refreshes you, but can harm your health

Air conditioning has become one of the most used devices during hot summer days, but doctors warn that prolonged exposure to cold air can be associated with a number of health problems.

According to family doctors, quoted by "The Independent", the very low temperatures and dry air produced by air conditioners can affect some parts of the body, especially when used for long hours.

One of the most common effects is dry skin. Dr. Opel Baker from the Mayfield Clinic in Brighton explains that air conditioners remove moisture from the air, causing the skin to lose water more quickly. As a result, dryness, chapped lips, irritation or worsening of eczema can occur in people with sensitive skin.

Dry air also affects the eyes, causing burning, stinging, and a "sandy" sensation in the eyes. These discomforts are more common in people who wear contact lenses.

Experts warn that air conditioning can also affect the nose and throat. Drying out the mucous membranes can cause a sore throat, nasal congestion, hoarseness and in some cases even nosebleeds. According to Dr. Lucy Hooper, this also weakens the body's natural defenses against infections.

The risk also increases for the respiratory system, especially if air conditioner filters are not cleaned regularly. The dust, pollen, and mold that can accumulate in them can irritate the airways, worsen asthma, and increase the risk of respiratory infections.

Working for many hours in very cold environments can also be associated with headaches, muscle tension, and neck and shoulder pain, problems related to dehydration and constant exposure to cold air.

To avoid these consequences, doctors recommend constant hydration, the use of moisturizing creams, periodic cleaning of air conditioner filters, directing the air flow away from the face, and avoiding very low temperatures indoors.

Dr. Lucy Hooper also advises not to turn on the air conditioner immediately upon entering the home or office, but only when temperatures get really high, in order to limit unnecessary exposure to cold air.
