Who is the 'invisible' man who walks beside us? The paranormal

Have you ever heard of "Third Man Syndrome"? If not, in this article you will find some answers to this mysterious phenomenon.

It usually affects people who suffer from high levels of stress or are anxious about something. But it can also come in moments of calm. The feeling is described as if another person appears next to us, giving a sense of comfort, and sometimes a warning that something bad is about to happen.

Some people say it's like an inner voice or feeling that you can't "get rid of". Others believe that a person appears to them dressed in a "dazzling light".

There are a number of experiences for this sensation, from psychological to spiritual ones.

However, there is also a poem titled "The Waste Land" that was inspired by the experience of Ernest Shackleton, an Irish explorer who went on an expedition to Antarctica in 1916. After his ship foundered, he and two other crew members walks for 36 hours on the glacier. During that time, each of the three men had the feeling that a fourth person was with them. So TS Elliot wrote his poem, inspired by this phenomenon:

Who is the third person who always walks by your side?

When I count, it's just me and you together

But when I look away on the white road

There is always someone else walking beside you...

These are some of the verses of the poem.

BuzzFeed has selected some of the experiences of people who have been affected by this strange syndrome, as follows:

-"I was only 5 years old, I was sitting in the back seats of the car. My mom was driving us home after some shopping we did. I was very tired and falling asleep. Suddenly, I heard someone yelling my name and yelling at me to wake up. I opened my eyes and asked my mom why she yelled at me. She told me, I didn't do anything. Just at that moment, a truck crashed into our car. If I hadn't been awake, I would have been blown to pieces by that crash, as the truck hit the part where I was lying down to sleep. Apart from a few scratches on my arms and legs, I was fine. If that voice didn't wake me up, I would be dead today."

-"My husband and I went out for lunch. The restaurant had televisions mounted on the wall above and one of them was in the corner near our table. As we sat down, I kept hearing a voice telling me I had to go to the bathroom. At first I ignored it…I didn't need to go, but it was so repetitive as a voice that I decided to go wash my hands. I stood on the toilet for 30 seconds when I heard a terrible noise. When I came back, I saw that the TV had fallen on my chair. Thank God I heard that voice!”

-"I have escaped from disasters many times in my life. More than a voice, it is a kind of thought that comes in the form of a command. One day as I was driving to pick up my daughter from school, I was so glad there was no traffic. The empty road was amazing! Suddenly a thought came to my head: Accidents happen! Not knowing that this was the voice that I don't know where it came from, I said to myself: OK, there is no car on the road. No man! Then, I heard someone shouting at me in a loud voice: Turn right! I don't know how, but a big car flew into the middle of the road. If I had not taken that turn, the accident would have been fatal. This voice became my guardian angel!”

–“One night, I received a phone call from a relative with whom I had some conflicts before. He knew where I lived and that I was home alone that night as my husband was at work. He started telling me horrible things and I got so scared because that person lived near us. Suddenly, I heard the voice of a man who told me: Everything will be fine! I heard him so clearly that I thought he was in the same room with me. The person on the other end of the phone asked me: Who is that man with you and hung up. I never heard from him again!”

-"I was 9 years old and due to a birth defect I was forced to be admitted to the hospital from time to time, to perform some interventions. One night in the hospital, I was in a lot of pain and decided not to lie down anymore. I rang the bell for the nurses to help me to the toilet and at that moment a man dressed in white appeared next to me smiling at me. He was so happy and gave you a sense of peace. The next day, I asked the staff to bring the man to my room, thinking he was a nurse. They were surprised by the description I gave…”
