Good news for HIV/AIDS patients, injection that is administered once every six

In a major advance in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the new drug “Yeztugo”, an innovative injection that requires only one dose every six months to prevent HIV infection.

Developed by Gilead Sciences, “Yeztugo” creates a depot under the skin – usually in the abdominal area – which gradually releases the active substance, providing long-term protection. Although it does not protect against other sexually transmitted diseases, it is considered a revolutionary step towards curbing the spread of HIV.

However, despite the enthusiasm, challenges to the drug's mass distribution remain: federal funding for prevention programs is at risk from cuts proposed by the Trump administration, while the price of Yeztugo has not yet been made public, raising questions about access for the most at-risk patients.

According to the WHO, 1.3 million new infections and 630,000 deaths from HIV/AIDS will be recorded worldwide in 2023 alone. “Yeztugo has the potential to change the course of this epidemic,” said Gilead CEO Daniel O’Day, calling the approval “a major step toward a world without HIV/AIDS.”
