Social engagements increase, meetings follow one another, and many of them revolve around food: aperitifs, lunches, dinners, and, finally, the long Christmas and New Year's dinners.

Beautiful moments, full of atmosphere, but also a difficult test for the masses. Between the sweets, the rich traditional dishes and the more frequent alcohol than usual, it is very easy to get out of the "frame".

The good news is that you can enjoy the holidays without giving up everything and feeling bad the next day. Here's a practical mini-guide with tips to help you get through this period "without consequences."

Don't eat everything that comes to the table.

The end-of-year holidays are often a real challenge for our bodies. Social engagements increase, meetings follow one another and many of them revolve around food: aperitifs, lunches, dinners and, finally, the long Christmas and New Year's dinners. Beautiful moments, full of atmosphere, but also a difficult test for the body. Between sweets, rich traditional dishes and more frequent alcohol than usual, it is very easy to go out of the "frame". The good news is that you can enjoy the Holidays without giving up everything and without feeling bad the next day. Here is a practical mini-guide with tips to help you get through this period "without consequences".

You don't have to try everything. Saying "no" is your right and, in a way, also a way of taking care of your body. If you want to, try only small amounts, or politely decline.

Go out every day, or at least avoid combining lunch and dinner.

The body (and mind) needs time to recover. If you do a lighter "detox" day after a heavy dinner, with simpler foods, high in fiber, fruits, and vegetables, you'll better balance the sugars and fats from the previous day.

Be careful with salt, fats and sugar

Excess can lead to bloating, water retention, increased blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. And this, in the end, translates into unpleasant, sometimes even worrying, sensations.

Make room for fruits and vegetables.

Nutrition should be varied. It is good to alternate animal proteins with plant proteins. Legumes are a very good solution in periods of "excess", as are fruits and vegetables. Even when you go out, you can choose a salad, or a lighter vegetarian/vegan dish.

Go “just for coffee”

Not every holiday gathering has to be accompanied by sweets, alcohol, and lots of calories. Stopping by to greet people after you've eaten healthily earlier is not a "guilt" and doesn't make you less sociable.

Drink alcohol in moderation.

Wine and alcohol have a social role, especially at Christmas and New Year's dinners, so it's sometimes hard to give it up. But alcohol weighs down the body, affects the digestive and excretory systems, and promotes weight gain. A good compromise is to reduce the number of drinks, or to space out outings, just like with large meals.

Drink about 2 liters of water a day.

There's no need to be "sparing" with water. When you eat more sugar and fat, the best thing to do is help your body cleanse itself. Water helps your body function normally. Drink throughout the day, not just during meals.

Say "yes" to the movement

Even during the holidays, I find some time for physical activity. It doesn't matter if it's intense exercise; what matters is that you move. Even a walk of about an hour a day keeps your metabolism active and your body in rhythm.

Get out into the fresh air.

Even if it's cold, dress warmly and get outside, especially during the warmest hours of the day. The body needs fresh air, ventilated spaces, and movement outside. After overeating, walking in the open air helps to avoid gas accumulation, bloating, and improves oxygenation.

Don't underestimate the help of nature.

There are herbs with digestive properties that can help after heavy meals, mitigating the effects of overeating. Bergamot, papaya, fennel, ginger, and licorice are often mentioned.
