Actor Nicolas Cage is back in the spotlight again with an unusual role. This time, he 'steps into the shoes' of Serbian spy Duško Popov, the real-life man who is thought to have inspired writer Ian Fleming to create the legendary figure of James Bond.

Cage, 61, has begun filming his new film “Fortitude,” a spy thriller set during World War II, directed by his longtime collaborator Simon West. The two previously worked on “Con Air” (1997) and “Stolen” (2012).

"Fortitude" tells the story of British intelligence's efforts to deceive Nazi Germany into believing that the Allied landings would take place in Calais, rather than Normandy, an operation known as Fortitude.

In this deception plan, Duško Popov, a Serbian citizen and double agent, played a crucial role. Known for his wit and charm, Popov was known in intelligence circles for his elegant style and ability to manipulate information – qualities that would later be embodied in the character of James Bond. According to some historical sources, the famous number “007” is even related to the fact that when Popov sought advice from his uncle in Belgrade, he had to remember the telephone number 26-007.

Early photos from the filming in the English countryside show Nicolas Cage wearing a tuxedo and bow tie, holding a pistol as he pulls over a vintage Bentley in the road. Inside the car are two other characters: a man and a young woman, played by American actress Jenny Watwood in an as-yet-unconfirmed role. In one scene, Cage is seen forcing the driver out of the car so he can take the wheel himself and drive off with his passenger.

The film is expected to feature an international cast including Matthew Goode, Ed Skrein, Jordi Mollà, Alice Eve, Michael Sheen, Sir Ben Kingsley and Art Malik. To ensure historical accuracy, the production has hired historian Joshua Levine, who previously collaborated with Christopher Nolan on Dunkirk.

Filming for “Fortitude” began in September and will run until early next year. The film’s release date has not yet been announced, but expectations are high, both for Cage’s return in a role worthy of his long career, and for his portrayal of an intriguing figure who bridges the reality with the legend of the world’s most famous agent.
