What seemed like a science fiction movie scene a few years ago is now becoming a reality. The American company Alef Aeronautics has officially announced that it has begun production of what it calls "the world's first flying car" intended for use by the general public.
According to the Daily Mail, it is about the futuristic Alef Model A Ultralight, an electric vehicle that not only moves on the road, but is capable of rising vertically into the air and flying over obstacles or traffic. The secret of flight lies in the eight propellers hidden in the front and rear of the vehicle, which are not visible when moving on the ground.
After the flight is over, the car lands normally and continues to operate as a regular electric vehicle, making the transition from air to road almost indistinguishable.
After more than 10 years of development, Alef Aeronautics confirms that the first vehicles will be hand-built at the company's facilities in Silicon Valley, California. Each unit requires several months of craftsmanship, intensive testing, and strict safety checks before being delivered to the customer. Initially, only a limited number of buyers will have the opportunity to use the vehicle, and only under highly controlled conditions.
The Model A Ultralight weighs just 385 kilograms and is classified as a “low-speed” electric vehicle. This means that on public roads the maximum speed is limited to 40 km/h. However, despite the restrictions on the ground, the vehicle is certified for flight by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) – a historic step for this type of technology.
Interest in the flying car has been overwhelming. The company says it has received over 3,500 pre-orders, with a total value exceeding £800 million.
Currently, the price of an Alef Model A Ultralight is around £235,000, a figure that still places it in the luxury category. However, the company is optimistic that with mass production in the future, the cost will be significantly reduced, making the flying car a more accessible reality for the general public.
