American rapper and businessman Sean “Diddy” Combs was sentenced to 50 months in federal prison by a Manhattan court after pleading guilty to charges related to transporting women for the purpose of prostitution. The verdict was handed down Friday and marks one of the most high-profile cases of justice against one of the most powerful figures in the music industry.
At the hearing, Combs admitted that his behavior was "disgusting and shameful," apologizing to his victims, including singer Cassie Ventura, who had previously accused him of abuse. Prosecutors had sought a much harsher sentence, more than 11 years in prison, stressing that Diddy's case was an example of a systematic abuse of power and wealth.
The artist's defense argued for leniency, highlighting his contributions to music and philanthropy, as well as his personal struggles with trauma and mental health. However, Judge Arun Subramanian ruled that despite his remorse, Combs' actions had been organized and documented as part of a repeated plan, so a harsh sentence was necessary to send a clear message.
Combs has been in custody since September 2024 and has not been eligible for bail. He was found guilty on two main charges, while being acquitted of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and organized corruption. His sentence, more than four years in prison, is lighter than the prosecution's request, but still marks a dramatic downfall for one of the icons of global hip-hop.
This process is expected to have a major impact on the music and legal industries in the US, showing that even global star status and billions do not protect you from justice when it comes to such abuses.
