Unlike much of the wealth that Prince William and Prince Harry inherited from their mother, Princess Diana, the historic family estate, the Althorp Estate, will not pass to them. This is due to a centuries-old tradition known as male primogeniture, according to which the title and property are inherited by the eldest son of the family.
The Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire, where Diana spent her childhood and is buried, belongs to their cousin, Louis Spencer, the son of Diana's brother, Charles Spencer. Despite having an older sister, Louis will be the heir to the valuable estate, according to tradition.
In this way, while William and Harry inherited most of Diana's personal wealth, the historic property will remain in the hands of a male heir, reflecting a practice that, although challenged, continues to remain unchanged in the Spencer family.
