Copyright problems, Disney risks paying $10 billion if found guilty of

Animator Buck Woodall has sued Disney for stealing parts of his script for the animated film “Moana 2.” In the lawsuit filed in California federal court, Woodall claims that Disney used a script he wrote for another film called “Bucky.”

According to him, both scenarios take place in a legendary Polynesian village and share a similar theme, involving young people trying to escape their homes and encountering spirit animals along the way.

The lawsuit follows a November hearing, when a judge dismissed Disney from a similar lawsuit Woodall had filed for the first “Moana” film, saying he had been too late in filing the lawsuit. However, the release of “Moana 2” gave Woodall the opportunity to resume legal proceedings.

In his lawsuit, Woodall alleges that he presented the script and materials for the “Bucky” film to Jenny Marchick, a former executive at Mandeville Films who is now at DreamWorks Animation. Woodall alleges that Marchick requested the materials and assured him that she could greenlight the project.

For this reason, Woodall is seeking $10 billion in damages, which is 2.5% of the gross of the film "Moana," as well as an injunction to prevent further infringement of his copyright.

On the other hand, "Moana" director Ron Clements has claimed that the Disney film was not inspired by "Bucky" and has no connection to it.
