The truth is that animal memory has been a concern for us for a long time, and that's why researchers have tried and come up with some answers to this question. Namely, whether cats remember their caregiver after a long time or whether they generally remember the people they've met and interacted with.
Which people remember cats?
Cats, according to research, have a very good long-term memory. The people they remember are those with whom they have a strong emotional connection. That is, a cat can remember a loved one because they spent good time with them, took care of them, gave them food and love, but they are also able to remember someone who did not treat them well and, unfortunately, may even have abused them. And these memories usually last forever.
How do you know if your cat remembers you?
Cats have a variety of ways to interact with people. Some of the signs that a cat remembers you even if it's been a while since you've seen them include:
- approaches you and asks you to caress her in her own way
- pat your head
- wants to be near you even if you are in the same room
-she is quite "talkative" and playful when she sees you
On the contrary, if a person has not treated her well, she may begin to tremble, become afraid, run away from him, try to hide, or in some cases become aggressive.
If a cat has never met a person before, it is likely to be cautious at first and hide for a while until it determines that this person does not pose a threat.
How do cats associate a person with a memory?
A cat's sense of smell and hearing play a much more important role than their sight. They will rely more on scents and sounds than on what they see.
Newborn kittens use their sense of smell to remember their mother, especially in the first few days of their lives when they can’t see or hear. Similarly, they use their sense of smell and hearing to remember their caregivers and other important people in their lives, or even cats, dogs, or pets in general. Of course, they also use their hearing to remember people and other animals. Many studies have shown that cats react positively to hearing their caregiver’s voice, while being indifferent to other voices they’ve never heard before.
