The holiday season involves a lot of food and plenty of it, beyond the usual alcohol.
But how long do health professionals estimate it takes for your liver to fully recover from the copious amounts of alcohol consumed during the festive week?
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead people to symptoms such as nausea, weight loss and appetite, yellowing of the eyes and skin, swelling of the ankles and abdomen, drowsiness, and vomiting blood.
Even just a few days of heavy drinking can lead to a build-up of fat in the liver and the NHS suggests that it can take around two weeks for fatty liver disease to reverse.
However, this is not always the case, as it can vary from person to person.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, it can take a little over two weeks.
They explain that abstaining from alcohol for two to four weeks helps reduce inflammation in the liver. However, if your liver has suffered from the long-term effects of alcohol, doctors may recommend that you quit drinking altogether.
“For patients who are left with cirrhosis after severe liver damage from alcohol, even a single drink is toxic to the liver,” notes Dr. Christina Lindermeier.
If you want to keep your liver healthy for as long as possible, the best option is to drastically reduce your alcohol consumption or stay completely sober, and not just for January, but on a more permanent basis.
