Science goes a 'step' forward, earthquake prediction will be possible

Japan, known for seismic activity, is developing a system that can warn citizens 10 to 20 minutes before tremors. The scientific group from Japan, the USA, China and European countries, during an international conference in Hania, Greece, emphasized the importance of electromagnetic waves, considering them as the "key" for predicting earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Professor Philippos Vallianatos from the University of Athens explained that there has been progress in the research, offering perspectives for the future of research in this field. The Japanese system is designed to make rapid data analysis, focusing on electromagnetic anomalies that appear before large earthquakes.

Tashiyasu Nagao, a professor at Tokai University, pointed out that Japan is committed to the effective distribution of information to the population. This system helps in the rapid collection of data to provide reliable warnings. The conference on applications of electromagnetism in seismology and volcanology, which was first held 25 years ago, has advanced the field.

Scientists have emphasized the need for frequent data collection to improve forecasting. This approach is important for countries like Greece, which also has a history of seismic activity. Pre-shock electromagnetic data provide a new opportunity for predicting natural disasters. Thus, the Japanese system will contribute to the preservation of lives and property by providing timely information.

This scientific advance is an example of international cooperation and technological advancements in dealing with natural hazards.
