The syndrome of throwing things from fans to singers, the reason why it happens

Why do music fans throw things on stage while their favorite artist performs? Nicholas Malvagna, a 27-year-old from New Jersey, gave an explanation after being charged with assault for throwing his phone at singer Bebe Rexha.

Malvagna thought that "it would be gallant" to hit Rexha.

This incident was reminiscent of recent confrontations between celebrities and discarded items. Last year, singer Steve Lacy destroyed an iPhone that was thrown on stage by a fan.

A few months ago, a fan in Toronto threw a doll at Lady Gaga while she was singing the Top Gun: Maverick theme song.

In the same week as Rexha's incident, a fan entered the Los Angeles stage where Ava Max performed, punching the singer so hard that he "scratched the inside of her eye," according to her tweet.

But fans say there's a reason these cases seem to be happening more often. Celebrities like Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish have taken fans' phones (consensually), filmed a video mid-show and returned the phones to their owners.

It's one way to go viral – so eager fans are throwing their iPhones in the hope that their favorite singer will leave them a little gift.

Paul Wertheimer, a crowd safety manager, also blames the quarantine that happened due to covid, and going out after being locked up for a while leads to aggressive behavior.

Fans aren't the only people who throw things into crowds – the singers themselves do it too.

Beyonce threw sunglasses into the crowd during a recent UK show.
