From Shakespeare's plays to modern movies, love triangles have always intrigued audiences. However, a new study from Seattle University suggests that some of these dynamics may represent a unique form of sexual attraction: "symbiosexuality." Symbiosexual people are attracted to the energy between committed couples rather than the individuals themselves.
Dr. Sally Johnston, assistant professor of anthropology and sociology, found that many study participants felt a romantic and sexual attraction to the 'synergy' between couples. "We need to rethink engagement beyond one-on-one experiences," she noted. The interest of dr. Johnston's understanding of this phenomenon began while researching the treatment of bisexual women who join heterosexual couples in polyamorous relationships.
Surveying 373 participants, dr. Johnston found that 145 people reported feeling attracted to the dynamic between two people in a couple. Although the study's sample was small and skewed toward white, queer, polyamorous individuals, it found consistent evidence of symbiosexual attraction.
Unlike traditional polyamorous relationships, where there is mutual attraction between all members, symbiosexual individuals are attracted to the collective energy of the couple. For example, one participant, Hayden, said, "You feed off their energy, their attraction to each other." Another, Sage, expressed a desire to be "in the middle of that relationship."
Symbiosexual individuals often describe themselves as extroverted, desiring intimacy, care, and appreciation and less prone to jealousy. They also reported greater attraction to queer and non-heterosexual couples. Dr. Johnston believes further research is needed to explore how symbiosexual attraction affects mental health and relationship satisfaction, hoping her work will reduce stigma and expand our understanding of desire.
