The US president announces investment deals with Gulf states in place of the planned tariff, while warning of new measures against Iran.
United States President Donald Trump has announced that his administration has dropped its plan to impose a 20% tariff on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, just over 24 hours after announcing it.
In a post on the social network Truth Social, Trump said the decision was made after "extremely productive conversations" with Middle Eastern leaders and that the tariff would be replaced by trade and investment agreements between the United States and the Gulf countries.
The US president praised US military leaders, citing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine and CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper, for their role in ensuring security in the region.
Trump declared that, thanks to the American military presence, the Strait of Hormuz will remain open to international maritime traffic, but not to Iran.
" Oil is flowing like never before thanks to the extraordinary power of the US military. Because of them, the Strait of Hormuz is open to all ships, except Iran. We will impose a complete blockade, but only on ships going to or coming from Iranian ports, or carrying Iranian goods ," Trump wrote.

He accused the Iranian leadership of leading the country towards "total destruction," calling it "lying, violent and malicious."
Trump added that, instead of the 20% tariff, the Gulf states would invest billions of dollars in the American economy.
" I have decided to replace the 20% tariff with trade and investment agreements. These investments will be gigantic. Factories, plants and equipment will flow into the United States at historic levels, creating millions of high-paying jobs for Americans. America is winning again ," he said.
At the end of the statement, the US president reiterated his stance on the Iranian nuclear program.
" The days of Iran killing hundreds of thousands of people are over and, above all, Iran will never have a nuclear weapon ," he says.
Trump's announcement marks an immediate change in the policy announced the day before on the Strait of Hormuz, shifting the focus from tariffs on ships to economic agreements with Arab allies, while at the same time warning of new restrictive measures against Iranian maritime transport.
