20-year-old model Maria Kovalchuk, who mysteriously disappeared two weeks ago in Dubai, only to be found a few days later seriously injured and abandoned on the side of the road, has emerged from a coma, according to the 'Daily Mail'.
Maria Kovalchuk, who is 20, had been missing for eight days after telling friends she had been invited to a party at a hotel on March 9.
She had decided to attend the event with two men who introduced themselves as representatives of the modeling business, Ukrainian media reported.
When the model was found after several days of searching, she had multiple fractures to her spine and limbs.
According to the Dubai police statement, Maria may have fallen from a great height. As her friends reported, Kovalchuk came out of the coma and is conscious, but she still cannot talk about what happened to her.
The 20-year-old is still being treated in a Dubai hospital, having stabilized after a series of operations and fortunately her life is no longer in danger.
The circumstances surrounding the rape remain unclear, but her friends have suggested she may have been involved in a trafficking ring. They said there are fears Kovalchuk may have been kidnapped and forced to have sex before her perpetrators abandoned her.
Ukrainian police announced on Saturday that they have launched an official preliminary investigation into human trafficking, under a relevant provision of the Criminal Code, which provides for penalties for recruiting, transporting or concealing victims for the purpose of exploitation. The investigation is ongoing by the Criminal Investigation Department of the National Police in the Lviv region, with no suspects so far.
The model told her mother, Anna, that she would stay with the representatives overnight, but then she disappeared. Maria had booked a flight to Thailand that departed from Dubai on March 11, but did not show up at the airport.
Anna and her worried friends then contacted local authorities who launched a search for Maria and opened an investigation, as she remained missing for several days.
On March 19, ten days after she disappeared, Maria, beaten and bleeding, was found lying on a street in Dubai with broken limbs and a broken spine, according to Russian media outlets Shot and Life.
She was rushed to hospital and, according to her mother, underwent three life-saving operations. The model remains in critical condition and is reportedly unable to speak, writes DailyMail.
Friends and family hope she recovers fully to talk about her ordeal and explain what happened.
Speaking to Ukrainian media, the model's mother, Anna, said: "There is an assumption that she went to a party. But the promoter who organized these parties was not seen. Today Maria was found in serious condition. She has no documents, no phone, nothing, she has undergone three operations. And she cannot speak."
Maria's friend, Russian model Angelina Doroshenkova, 31, said: "We are all hoping for the best and are very grateful to everyone who took part in the search and helped with information." She was spending time with Maria in Dubai and was reportedly invited to the same party on March 9, but decided not to go.
