The doctors of the "Agios Loukas" clinic in Thessaloniki have faced one of the most serious cases of a girl with Rapunzel syndrome a few days ago, after it was found that the 14-year-old sent to the emergency room, had a large mass of hair weighing 700 grams in her stomach.
As the Greek press informs, this tangle or mass is one of the largest that has been found and removed in cases of this syndrome all over the world.
"Hirophlema is the mass of undigested hairs in the gastrointestinal tract after eating them. The frequency in the general population varies from 0.06% to 4%", explains the pediatric surgeon and head of the Pediatric Surgery Department at the "Agios Loukas" clinic, Katerina Rammata.
According to experts, the 14-year-old girl, who has now recovered and is receiving psychological support, had been eating her hair for at least 12 years.
But she also ate threads from curtains in her house as well as cotton from ear cleaning sticks, without her parents noticing.
Rapunzel syndrome appears nine times more often in women than in men, and in these cases 80% of cases are found mainly in children or teenagers. The clinical name of the syndrome is trichophagia and it can have fatal consequences for the patient.
As a result of the human body's inability to digest each hair and its synthetics, over time the hair accumulates creating a mass (known as a Trichobezoar) which becomes trapped within the digestive system.
Surgery is usually necessary to remove this mass as it can cause discomfort and other threatening consequences.
