Irene, the daughter of Robert De Niro, chose at the age of 29 to speak publicly for the first time and reveal that she is a transgender woman. In an interview published on Tuesday, April 29, in the magazine "Them", the young actress and model spoke about her identity and shared details about her life as one of the actor's seven children.
"There's a difference in being visible. I was visible, but I don't think they've seen me yet," said 29-year-old Erin.
Referring to those media outlets who called her "the child of famous parents" because of her father, she said: I didn't grow up attending my father's films, going to business meetings or attending premieres. My father was very strict about finding our way. I would like success to come with my qualifications.
Her mother, actress Tookie Smith, has Irene and her twin brother Julian with the 81-year-old Oscar-winning actor: Of course, no parent is perfect, but I'm grateful that both of my parents agreed to keep me out of the spotlight. They told me they wanted me to have as normal a childhood as possible. They always told me I was too strong or not strong enough: 'Too big, not skinny enough. Not black enough, not white enough. Too feminine, but not masculine enough.' They never just said; 'You're exactly the way you're supposed to be, exactly the way you are.
Inspired by her mother and "the influence that women of color have on her," she decided to start hormone therapy in November of last year: I hope to be an inspiration to at least one person like me, who is of color, who is queer, who doesn't wear a size too small. I would like to see more transgender women, more women of color who are maybe fuller or don't fit the stereotype of being too thin.
