Tomorrow, the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games will officially begin, while on the eve of the opening ceremony in Milan, United States Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have arrived.
Vance traveled to Italy with his wife, Usha Vance, and their children, and was greeted at the airport by local authorities and the US Ambassador to Italy, Tilman Fertitta. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived at Malpensa a little earlier, joining the official US delegation.
According to official sources, the American mission consists of an exceptionally large delegation, accompanied by tight security measures. In total, 14 planes were used to transport aides, intelligence personnel and security forces. Up to 300 security agents were engaged to protect the vice president and his family. A cargo plane transported food from the United States for the delegation, while two other planes brought armored vehicles to be used during official movements.
At the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, JD Vance will lead the American delegation, which includes, in addition to his family, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ambassador Tilman Fertitta. The delegation also includes several famous former Olympic athletes.
Among them are sisters Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux, former women's ice hockey stars and gold medalists at the 2018 Winter Games, as well as Apolo Ohno, one of the most successful American short track speed skaters, with a total of eight Olympic medals, including two golds from the 2002 and 2006 Games. Also part of the delegation is Evan Lysacek, a former figure skater and gold medalist at the 2010 Olympics, currently also known for his participation in the television program "Dancing with the Stars."
Vance's participation in the opening ceremony follows precedents set by former US vice presidents Joe Biden, who attended the Vancouver Winter Games in 2010, and Mike Pence, who traveled to PyeongChang, South Korea, in 2018. Unlike them, former vice president Kamala Harris did not attend the Beijing Winter Games in 2022, due to the Biden administration's diplomatic boycott, motivated by concerns about human rights in China.
After completing his visit to Italy, JD Vance is expected to travel to Armenia and Azerbaijan. According to official US sources, he has been tasked by President Donald Trump with advancing an agreement aimed at ending the long-standing conflict between the two countries, which has lasted for nearly four decades.
