World Cup, Germany in goalkeeper crisis; who will defend the goal?
German national team coach

Marc-Andre ter Stegen recently suffered such a serious injury in the Spanish league that he chose to undergo surgery.

The German national team goalkeeper made the announcement on Thursday. "Our greatest joy is competition, training and matches. Now I have to put all of that on hold for a few months," said the 33-year-old, who is unsure whether he will be able to recover before the start of the World Cup.

Ter Stegen left FC Barcelona in January after more than 12 years, joining Girona to gain playing time after losing his starting position for the Catalan club. But his injury problem has prevented him from being part of the German national team.

And if he's not ready, who will be in goal for Germany at the World Cup (June 11 to July 19 in the US, Canada and Mexico)?

Manuel Neuer (39/FC Bayern). In the summer of 2024, the 2014 World Cup winner announced his retirement from the national team. Experts and fans have repeatedly called for his return.

Oliver Baumann (35 / TSG Hoffenheim). He has played 10 international matches so far, recently becoming the temporary No. 1.

Bernd Leno (33/FC Fulham). He last played for the national team in 2021 and has not been selected recently.

Stefan Ortega (33/Nottingham Forest). He was also recently left out of Nagelsmann's squad. He moved from Manchester City to Nottingham Forest this winter. He is yet to feature for his new club.

Alexander Nübel (29), Finn Dahmen (27), Noah Atubolu (23). All three were recently reserve goalkeepers in the DFB squad.

Marc-André ter Stegen (33 / FC Girona). It is not excluded that he will return and be fit by the summer.
