One side of the dormitory for medical students in Tirana is covered by Lionel Messi's mural. Argentinian painter Maximiliano Bagnasco, who is part of the "Tirana Mural Fest 2023" decided to make a portrait of his idol, Lionel Messi.
The 25x10 meter mural of the bearded and smiling Mesi, wearing Argentina's number 10 jersey, will cover part of a building at an intersection near hospitals in the capital.
Bagnasko has also painted a mural of Diego Armando Maradona in Naples, Miami and other locations. Maradona won a World Cup with Argentina wearing the number 10 shirt. He then led Napoli to their first two Italian league titles in 1987 and 1990 before the team won their third title this season.
Two days after Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar last year, Bagnasko painted a mural in central Buenos Aires showing the Argentine talent lifting the trophy.
"Mesi is the best player in the world at the moment," said Bagnasko, referring to the footballer who has already decided to move to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. "Today the world is a fan of Argentina because of Messi."
Helidon Haliti, the painter who is the main curator of "Mural Fest", said that Bagnasko has also created other works for the competition.
When asked who his hero was, and what was the main theme of "Mural Fest 2023", he immediately answered "Mesi".
"That mural will mark a very interesting moment because Messi won the World Cup last year, and this time he will make us winners," said Haliti. "I am sure of that," he added.
Tirana is the European City of Sports 2023 and has developed and planned many continental sports activities. Albanians know it very well.
"Mesi deserves as a player and we Albanians also enjoy that world-class personality," said 61-year-old Arben Stafa.
Bashkim Tufa, a 71-year-old sports analyst, said he was happy to have been right when he predicted in 2005 that the world would have a new star "Messi", when the latter played for the first time with Barcelona. Since then, Mesi has been a constant part of his writings.
The triumph in the World Cup last year was the "icing on the cake", according to Tufa, adding that years ago, copies of a sports newspaper were devoured by Albanians reading that Messi could come to Albania.
"Now they have the opportunity to see him every day, meet him every day and this is a special pleasure for Albanians who are so passionate about football and Messi is the personification of it", said Tufa.
Bagnasko has enjoyed meeting and talking with local Albanians wearing or showing Mesi's shirt and greeting him.
"Argentinians are lucky to have had Maradona and Messi in the same place," said Bagnasko, showing a tattoo of the No. 10 on his left forearm.
