The President of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, has stated that the United States has not yet issued any visas for the Iranian delegation, as the hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches.
According to Iranian media and the Italian agency "ANSA", the issue of the entry of the leaders and members of the Iranian national team into American territory still remains open.
" We have not received any notification about who has obtained a visa. So far, no visa has been issued ," Mehdi Taj told the Iranian news agency IRNA.
The head of the Iranian Federation announced that an important meeting with FIFA is expected to take place in the coming days, where Iran will seek concrete guarantees for normal participation in the tournament.
" We will have a decisive meeting with FIFA tomorrow or the day after. They need to give us guarantees, because the visa issue has not yet been resolved ," Taj declared.
The situation has been further strained after reports that Mehdi Taj was recently detained at the Canadian border, due to previous ties to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, known as the Pasdaran.
Meanwhile, according to current procedures, Iranian footballers are expected to travel to Ankara to undergo the fingerprinting procedure, part of the US visa application.
" We have no connection with America. We have qualified for the World Cup and it is FIFA's duty to resolve it ," concluded the president of the Iranian Football Federation.
