Rolando Maran failed to get a positive result in his first match as Albania coach, as the Rossoneri were narrowly defeated by Israel. However, a look back at the past brings up interesting precedents for coaches who have started their journey with a loss.
One of them is Gianni De Biazi. The Italian made his debut on the bench of Albania on February 29, 2012, in a 2-1 away defeat to Georgia. Despite a poor start, De Biazi made history by qualifying the National Team for the first time in a major tournament such as “EURO 2016”.
A similar story belongs to Silvinho. The Brazilian coach began his adventure with a 1-0 loss to Poland, but then led Albania to qualification for EURO 2024.
De Biazi and Silvino remain the only two coaches to have secured the Rossoneri's participation in the European Championship so far. For this reason, Rolando Maran's losing debut can also be seen as a positive omen, although it remains to be seen whether the Italian will manage to follow the same path of success or whether everything will remain a mere coincidence.
