The court of Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris, has given the green light to the sale of the "Golden Ball" that Diego Armando Maradona won in the 1986 World Cup.
The lawyer of Maradona's heirs, Gilles Moreu, explained to EFE this Thursday after receiving the court's decision that "they will exercise all possible avenues of appeal".
Moreu explained that they have already appealed to the Versailles Court of Appeal and said they now hope to get a hearing before June 6 to stop the sale. "The Ballon d'Or is a unique asset that Diego Maradona's children want to recover. No amount of compensation can repair the damage suffered if this trophy is sold," he said.
" We are talking about a trophy, not a simple asset, which will end up with a very rich collector ". The price of Maradona's "Golden Ball" may exceed 10 million euros and become the most expensive sports object in history.
The decision considers that the seller, Abdelhamid B., acted in "good faith" when he bought the trophy in a second category auction in 2016 for a ridiculous amount (€1.20, according to Moreu).
Therefore, for the judge, the sale on June 6 of the object "does not bring imminent danger" to the interests of the heirs. " Our clients are both surprised and sad ", - admitted the lawyer, who believes that the auction should have been suspended until the dispute was clarified.
El Pelusa's family claims the Ballon d'Or was stolen from a Naples bank in the late 1980s, along with Maradona's other assets. Since then, its traces have been lost and it appeared only in 2016, when it was bought by Abdelhamid B., who has always claimed that he bought it without knowing that it was Maradona's "Golden Ball".
In parallel with the process of the heirs, the Central Office of the Traffic of Cultural Property of France is investigating whether there was a criminal offense of "concealing a stolen object" by the collector.
