The Bulgarian Football Federation announced the sad news of Penev's death on Saturday, noting that he passed away after a long battle with a serious illness. Dimitar Penev is one of the most popular figures in the history of Bulgarian football.

The team's fourth place in the 1994 World Cup remains its greatest success. Considered one of the best defenders in his country, Dimitar Penev played 364 league matches with CSKA Sofia, scoring 25 goals.
