Albania has closed its competition in the World Weightlifting Championship that is being held in Phuket, Thailand. Briken Calja has made a good appearance, showing significant improvement compared to the last races, but without being able to leave much of a mark.
The 34-year-old red-and-black started the competition from Battery B of 73 kg, finishing the World Championship in tenth place, in breakaway, push, and doubles. Calja registered 152kg in the breakaway style, 181kg in the push style, closing the dual competition with 333kg, placing tenth in the triple.
Although he was not in his best condition, struggling with weight loss and physical problems, Calja improved by 5 kg the total result of the European Championship that was held during the month of February in Bulgaria. But the result of 333 kg remains far from the maximum of the Štérmena, who 3 years ago registered 342 kg, shocking the world with gold and silver medals at the World Cup.
We remind you that the World Cup in Thailand was also the last qualifying event for the Olympic Games, while Albania currently remains outside the norm for "Paris 2024". Calja is ranked 13th in the ranking and the chances of a qualifying ticket with a rate for him in Paris are already almost zero. Our champion tried until the end to touch the Olympic dream for the fourth time, even sacrificing the financial aspect. He did not compromise, starting from the European, as he chose to measure his strength in Olympic weight and with exceptional competition, with the sole aim of catching the norm of "Paris 2024".
